HI-RES IMAGING

images/Imaging-capturing.jpg

Imaging Art

Original artwork needs to be imaged and saved as a high resolution image for printing. We image artwork originals up to 60" x 48" in size. Ideally art that is imaged does not have any glass or acrylic covering it, but if it does, frequently we are still able to capture the image while minimizing glare from the glass or acrylic. Art can be framed or unframed. Art can have depth such as stretched canvases. Mixed media art using metals such as gold or silver can be imaged, but since these metals aren't true colors, we image with careful attention to lighting so as to get the best reproduction possible of these metals.

Imaging Technology

For artwork that is 8.5x11 or smaller, we utilize a high resolution flatbed scanner to perform the scans. These scans can digitally capture the artwork up to 1200 dpi. For larger artwork, we utilize a high-resolution camera. The artwork is illuminated with a large amount of uniform, high color rendition lighting. The camera is set properly to capture the artwork as a raw, high-resolution file. The camera is also set to a low iso to minimize noise in the image. Just prior to taking the image, the artwork is adjusted in position so as to capture the artwork with the best lighting possible. For paintings with depth of paint, for example, we pay attention to the shadows of the paint and reflectivity of paint and adjust the painting so as to achieve the most desirable image.

Imaging Resolution

For smaller images, image resolution can be up to 1200dpi. This means that images that are 8.5x11 can be enlarged to at least 17"x 22" and printed at 300dpi without significant loss of detail.

For images larger than 8.5x11, the images from the hi-res cameras are over 80MB (uncompressed .jpg or .png) in size. These images can be enlarged up to at least 36"x60" without significant loss of detail.
