MATTING SERVICES

images/Framing-Mats-Single Mat-medium.jpg

Single Mat

A single mat over a print does three important things. A single mat separates the print from the glass so that if there is any moisture that may accumulate on the inside of the glass, the moisture won't touch the print. Second, a single mat provides visual distance between the art and frame. Third, a single mat adds color to enhance the print. Note that if the mat is beveled, the the underlying core color of the mat will show on that 1/16" bevel.
images/Framing-Mats-Double Mat-medium.jpg

Double

A double mat has all the same benefits of a single mat, but also provides another color to use to complement the art. The bottom mat can be revealed from 1/4" to 1" all around the art and underneath the top mat. If the two colors are selected appropriatedly, together they can help add further depth and focus to the art.

Triple

Triple mats add further depth and distinction to art. By alternating the textures and colors of mats, you can achieve a border for the art that both highlights and augments the art's impact.

Reverse Bevel

Reverse bevels cut the bevel so that the underlying core color of the mat does not show. This results in contemporary style framing where the distinction between art, mat, and frame is softened.

Fillets

A fillet is slender finished moulding that is used on the inside of mats and mouldings. A fillet on the inside of a mat can add the combination of texture, color, and depth that is unmatched by mats alone. A fillet is frequently used as a beautiful alternative to double or triple mats. Fillet color range includes golds, silvers, colors, and wood tones.

Floating Art

Floating art prints or canvas on a mat adds 3-dimensionality to the piece. The art appears to float within the frame. For stretched canvas, the mat typically is linen so as to blend and so that glass isn't needed for conservation. For art prints, the mat can be cotton or fabric since glass is added for protection of both the print and mat.

Multiple Openings

Multiple openings mats unify the art and photos within a single frame. There can be any number of openings and they can be arranged vertically, horizontally, or in a collage pattern. The openings can be rectangular with square corners, rectangular with round corners, ovals, or custom shapes.

Suede

Suede mats common a variety of colors besides neutrals and create s aoft mottled appearance. Besides suede there are other textures such as denim, chenille, grasscloth, and leather - a texture for every style.

Linen

Fabric mats add a natural depth to any home decor. Fabric mats have the advantage that you don'ot need to cover your art with glazing such as glass. Choose from four types of linen mats: natural, tight-weave, pulled-thread, and rustic. Silk mats refect the enduring influence of Asian elegance and add a quiet sophistication to modern decor.
images/Framing-Mats-Alpha Cellulose-medium.jpg

Alpha Cellulose

Alpha Cellulose acid-free mats are made from pristine wood pulp fibers which have been chemically treated to eliminate the acids and lignins that can degrade the matboard and artwork. Alpha-cellulose matboards are suitable for minimum levels of conservation framing. Select from a wide selection of colors ranging from the whitest white to the deepest black. Our expert designers will help you select from over 150 different shades to zero in on the best color(s) for your art.
images/Framing-Mats-8 Ply-medium.jpg

8 Ply Mats

8-ply Mats add depth to your framing. Many mats are 4-ply in thickness. 8-ply Mats double this thickness. They come in a variety of shade including white, cream, neutrals, and black. 8-ply Mats are a creative alternative to double or triple matting and work particularly well for a contemporary style space.
images/Framing-Mats-Core-medium.jpg

Color Core

A single color core mat can replace two mats while still offering a contrasting bevel color. Most mats have a white or cream core with colored surface so that the 1/16" bevel of an opening takes on the white or cream color. Alternatively color core mats have a pastel or black colored core and colored surface. With these color core mats, the 1/16" bevel of an opening takes on the pastel or black color of the core. Sometimes that is exactly what the art needs rather than a double mat that generally reveals 1/4" of the underlying mat all around. The color core mats come in a variety of top and core shades to meet the most demanding framing projects.

Rag Cotton Mats

The quality of cotton RagMat is unsurpassed. Priceless documents such as the Gutenberg Bible, Shakespeare's first folio, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights exist today because they were penned on cotton paper. Cotton RagMat is environmentally friendly as it is processed without harsh chemicals or additives. RagMat is the only matting board backed by a lifetime warranty. Choose Museum Solids with pigment through the entire mat or Color Core RagMat that has a 100% cotton white, cream, or black core when a beveled highlight is desired.
