Phillip Wade was born and grew up in northern New Jersey. The museums and galleries of nearby New York City inspired him to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia; he graduated in 1981 with a Certificate in Painting.
A chance meeting with Bob Levers, Chairman of the Fine Arts Dept. at the U. of Texas Austin, led to the offer of a full scholarship in the MFA program in painting, graduating in 1984.
Wade has exhibited in galleries in Austin, Houston and San Antonio for more than twenty years (mainly the Patrick, Lyons-Matrix, Wally Workman and Lotus galleries in Austin).
His work can be found in innumerable private collections. Some of the better known are those of Academy-award winning actress Diane Ladd, Jesse Otto Hite: Director of the Blanton Museum at the U. of Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Benson Bentzin, the Driskill Hotel , Austin (sixth-street entrance) and a one-hundred foot mural at the ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Mort Topfer, retired partner of Michael Dell.
Besides painting full-time, he has been teaching at the Art School of the Austin Museum of Fine Arts for the last twelve years.
