Colosseo by artist Norman Bean

I drew this view of the Flavian Amphitheater, aka the Colosseum, to highlight the de-construction and avoid the more common view of the columns and capitols that adorn the standing outside wall. This drawing looks inside the passage ways of the outer two rings and up at the inside of the north outer wall. The history of this 1900 year old structure made a fascinating study. Built by Vespasian and his son Titus between AD 69 and AD 80, the Colosseum was named after the bronze statue of Nero, about 120 feet tall, ca. AD 64. In almost continuous use between AD 80 and 1550 the Colosseum housed many activities other than gladiators. Considered Church property since the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was consecrated as a sacred site in 1749. Within the walls Mass is still celebrated, as well as the occasional Rock Concert. Restoration, reconstruction and capping of the remaining structure began in 1805 and continues to this day.
